Completely okay, and more common than you'd think. Lots of London walking and rambling groups run easy local walks made for all abilities, and the beginner-friendly ones are used to welcoming people on their very first outing. Just come as you are - the longer countryside hikes ask for a bit more fitness, but there's a gentle group out there for everyone.
Not at all - it's a lovely mix. Many groups pair relaxed park and riverside strolls with countryside day trips by train, heading out to the North Downs, Chilterns and other spots within easy reach of London. Each group's description tells you the kind of routes to expect, so you can pick whatever appeals.
Less than you might fear. For local walks, comfy shoes, some water and clothes for the weather are plenty. For longer countryside hikes, bring proper walking boots, layers, a snack and any travel ticket you'll need - and don't worry, organisers always share the specifics beforehand so you can turn up prepared.
Usually very little. Many groups are free or just ask for a small contribution towards transport, so you can give one a try without committing. Some established rambling clubs have an annual membership - the group's own page will let you know what to expect.
